The Xystus Market - First
Century Jerusalem
Photo of The Upper City Agora marketplace in the Second Temple Model.
The
Xystus Market was not far from the Temple in the northeastern corner of the
Upper City on Mount Zion. The Upper City was where the wealthiest people in the
city lived in the first century AD. The high priests had their luxurious
mansions there were many villas and King Herod's palace was unsurpassed in
beauty. Even today the view from the hilltop is spectacular. The Xystus Market
was the first Marketplace you would come to when leaving the Temple and entering
the Upper City. Wealthy marketplaces contained fine shops with very beautiful
items sold by the merchants.
Ps 132:13-14 "For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His dwelling
place: "This is My resting place forever; Here I will dwell, for I have desired
it."
